Myth vs Reality: Addressing Common Misconceptions about Professional Organizing

Professional organizing is a valuable service that can transform your home and life. However, several myths and misconceptions surrounding the industry may deter people from seeking help. In this blog post, I’ll debunk some common myths I’ve encountered about professional organizing.

Myth 1: Professional organizers judge you for your clutter

Reality: This is one of the biggest myths and a true obstacle to progress. Professional organizers are non-judgmental and compassionate. They focus on helping you achieve your organizing goals without criticism. While I may ask questions to understand your situation better, it is always to help formulate a better solution for you. I had a client whose closet needed organizing. In his words, it was “a disaster and made him feel like a failure.”  While asking him what works and what doesn’t, he said he hates folding things, so clothes that need to be folded end up in multiple piles on the floor. Here the solution was simple: we took out his shelves and installed more hanging space so he didn’t need to fold 90% of his clothes. What he saw as a “failing” I recognized as just a lack of the right type of storage in his closet. I share this example to communicate two things:  you’re probably harder on yourself than you need to be and, organizers don’t view disorganized spaces as a reflection of the person.

Myth 2: It’s just cleaning and tidying up

I can’t tell you the number of times people ask for “someone who cleans and organizes” on online forums. Cleaners specialize in sanitizing spaces and cleaning up dirt, dust, and germs. Some also do laundry, clean dishes, and make beds.

Reality: While organizing sometimes involves tidying up, it goes beyond cleaning. I’m wouldn’t organize things on a shelf without wiping it down first! Organizers help you declutter, create efficient storage solutions, and develop systems to maintain your organization long-term. We customize our offerings based on your priorities, space, and things.

Myth 3: You have to get rid of everything

I’ve met skeptical people who say things like “Oh, first, you get rid of my stuff and then make what’s left look nice!”

Reality: Professional organizers don't force you to get rid of everything. They help you decide what to keep, donate, or discard based on your needs and priorities. I always ask my customer for their goals, and if I feel that their decisions aren’t moving them toward those goals, I point it out. This sometimes leads to an internal clarification to the customer for what the goal is or it serves as a reminder that the goal is accurate and their actions need to follow.

Myth 4: Organizing is a one-time fix

Reality: Organizers set up systems, and systems needs to be maintained either by you, or the organizer. Organizing is an ongoing process, and professional organizers can help you develop sustainable habits to maintain organization over time.

Myth 5: You have to be present during organizing sessions

Reality: While your input is valuable, you don't have to be present for every organizing session. Professional organizers can work independently based on your preferences and schedule. If you can only be available for a part of the process, the decluttering stage is what i would recommend to be involved in.

Myth 6: It’s for the rich!

Organizers are often associated with celebrities like the Kardashians, who are known for their pristine and perfectly organized spaces.

Reality: Professional organizing is for anyone who wants to improve their living space and lifestyle. Many organizers offer a range of services and pricing options to suit different budgets.

Professional organizing can benefit anyone looking to improve their living space and lifestyle. An organizer can save time, reduce stress, and create a more functional and harmonious living and working space. With accessible services, tailored solutions, and practical expertise, organizers are here to help you achieve your goals.
